Insulation Boards or Cement Boards?

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation Boards or Cement Backer Boards

XPS and Cement backer boards have become a common sight within the construction industry, with the changes in British standards [BS 5385] plywood is no longer being considered a suitable substrate for tiling onto walls and the use of any over boarding that can be subject to movement due to changes in moisture content has highlighted the need for a more sustainable long term solution.

Benefits of using an XPS boards such as; Delta, STS, Wedi, Marmox, Kerdi or Jakoboard.

Features

  • High compressive strength [10% Deflection]
  • Low moisture absorbance [0.6% Water absorption]
  • Excellent thermal performance
  • Fire Classification = Euro class E [Flammable]
  • Sound Reduction
  • Carry strength up to 85kg/M2
  • Light Weight & easy to cut
  • Render ready
  • Suitable for internal & external use
  • Use on floor and walls [thickness used dependant on substrate]
  • STS Boards available in thickness of; 6mm, 10mm, 12mm, 20mm, 30mm & 50mm.
  • DELTA Boards available in thickness of; 4mm, 6mm, 10mm, 12.5mm, 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, 50mm, 60mm, 70mm & 80mm

XPS board is usually sold for its use in wet areas and as a thermal underlay for electric UFH onto solid floors.

Benefits of using a Cement boards such as; Beava board/No more ply, Hardibacker, Knauf or Orbry.

Features

  • Solid and Durable
  • High water resistance
  • Increased strength with less build up – 6mm Cement board comparable to 18mm Ply
  • Doesn’t deform or deteriorate with exposure to water or the elements.
  • Holds up to 60kg / m2
  • Render ready
  • Suitable for internal and external use
  • Use on floor and walls [thickness used dependant on substrate]
  • A1 fire rated
  • Beava Boards available in thickness of; 6mm, 9mm, 12mm & 22mm T&G

Cement board is usually sold for strengthening wooden substrates to reduce deflection before tiling and is also commonly used in wet rooms due to its high water resistance and strength.  It can be used underneath electric UFH and also on top of water UFH systems.
